The Republican Party Executive Committee of St. Tammany Parish last week issued endorsements in two statewide races and a recommendation in a local tax proposition.
At its regular meeting on Tuesday, the RPEC voted to endorse Congressman Bobby Jindal for the office of Governor of Louisiana.
“At a time when our state is at a crossroads, Bobby Jindal represents the best and brightest hope for our future,” RPEC Chair Stephanie Berault said. “In his impressive career of public service, Congressman Jindal has served the citizens of Louisiana through executive-level appointments and in Congress. Moreover, his efforts in Washington have been not only on behalf of his constituents in the First District but of all Louisianians. We are pleased to give our support to his candidacy.”
In other action, the RPEC endorsed State Representative Mike Strain in the statewide race for Agriculture Commissioner.
“The state Department of Agriculture has long been in need of new leadership and overhaul,” Berault said. “Mike Strain is clearly the most qualified candidate for this office, and brings a record of integrity, honesty and public service to an agency in dire need of his talents and skills. Rep. Strain is certain to bring much-needed reform and transparency to this position and we are proud to offer our endorsement.”
On May 5, voters in the 8th and 9th Wards of St. Tammany will have the opportunity to vote on a tax restructuring for the Harbor Center. The RPEC voted to oppose this tax initiative.
Berault was elected to a third term as RPEC Chair Tuesday night and Hartman was elected to a second term as RPEC Vice Chair. Mary Bishop retained the position of Treasurer and Kristin McLaren was named Secretary.
